ORNL will excavate hot zone in 2007 Core samples of radioactive soil to be removed from site this May By FRANK MUNGER Knoxville News Sentinel (TN) April 3, 2006 OAK RIDGE - Five years after a cleanup effort was abandoned because of dangerous radiation levels, federal contractors are again making plans to excavate an underground zone of highly radioactive soil in the middle of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Bechtel Jacobs Co., the U.S. Department of Energy's environmental manager, and subcontractors will begin taking core samples from the area in May to verify the nuclear constituents and evaluate potential hazards. Excavation of the site, with removal of about 200 cubic yards of soil, is tentatively scheduled to begin in November 2007, said Dennis Hill, a spokesman for Bechtel Jacobs. ...
