What lies beneath Locals wonder if corps deliberately avoided finding contamination By DUANE SCHRAG Salina Journal (KS) April 9, 2006 When Salina public officials finally got their hands onto a draft copy of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers investigation of contamination at the former Schilling Air Force Base last summer, they were stunned. Getting a copy was no cakewalk. The corps refused to provide it, saying it doesn't share draft versions of its work. So the local officials got a copy of the document from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, which was reviewing it. What local officials discovered was that the corps had decided that a huge plume of contaminated water - a corps' map showed it stretched from the edge of the former air base well into neighborhoods in southwest Salina, as far north as Talley Drive and east of Haskett Avenue - had nothing to do with military use of the base. ...
