Lakewood could annex military basesANGIE LEVENTIS Tacoma News Tribune (WA) April 10, 2006 For the second time in a decade, Lakewood is looking into annexing its three next-door military installations – a move that could expand Pierce County’s second-largest city by 12,301 acres and many thousands of people. There are no concrete plans spelling out how much revenue Lakewood might gain by annexing McChord Air Force Base, Camp Murray and parts of Fort Lewis. All three are in unincorporated Pierce County as well as the city’s urban growth area. Lakewood officials announced last week that they’re searching for a consultant to answer some questions. A study is expected to be complete by October, at the latest. Lakewood City Manager Andrew Neiditz said annexation could be one option to raise money to purchase about 50 acres in the “clear zone,” land north of the McChord runway deemed the most likely place for a military airplane crash, according to a 1998 Air Force report. ...
