Protests Continue Against US Military Base Expansion By Christopher Carpenter Korea Times May 2, 2006 Protestors and farmers continue to occupy land in Pyongtaek set aside for the expansion of a U.S. military base, threatening to plant spring rice crops despite the government’s plan to evict them. As part of the base relocation plan, Camp Humphreys will triple in size by 2008 and incorporate soldiers currently stationed at Yongsan Garrison in Seoul and the 2nd Infantry Division near the border with North Korea. Those two camps will then close. The government has vowed to build a barbed wire fence around the area in a bid to evict those remaining on the land. Water to the fields will also be blocked, Yonhap News Agency reported Tuesday. The defense ministry has expressed concern that a delay in evicting the remaining occupants from the area intended for the expanded U.S. military facilities would increase the cost of relocation and discredit the government. ...
