Conflict delayed land deal County vote to aid NGIC, area developer By Jessica Kitchin Charlottesville Daily Progress (VA) May 7, 2006 With the clock ticking on a project that could bring hundreds of jobs to Albemarle County, federal and local officials and a key developer spent weeks at loggerheads before reaching a deal that would allow for the expansion of the National Ground Intelligence Center. The county’s goal was to get NGIC the land it needed adjacent to its site along northbound U.S. 29. Although local officials are confident that the deal will keep NGIC in Albemarle, the move also benefits landowner Wendell Wood, who has gotten an unusual pass to build in an area the county had sought to keep rural. How Wood, the county and the federal government came to their agreement offers a glimpse into the political give-and-take that helps shape development in Albemarle, a booming locality where officials must balance their efforts to control growth with their desire for the right types of new jobs. ...
