Editorial: Navy-county buffer a win-win agreement

Fallon’s golden goose appears to be nowhere near the chopping block.
In June 2005, this newspaper called for local officials to ensure that development did not encroach upon NAS Fallon. A recently-signed deal goes a long way to protect the naval base's capacity for the future.


The buffer zone agreement recently signed by Churchill County and the U.S. Navy encourages the transfer of development rights from agricultural lands near the base to areas the county deems fit for urban growth, especially northwest of Fallon.

Landowners can be compensated for their forfeiture of development rights and a conservation easement placed on the property.
The Navy has pledged $3 million toward the effort.
