Munitions Impact on Ocean StudiedBrooks Baehr KGMB-9 TV News (HI) May 30, 2006 Thousands of explosives litter the ocean floor off of Waianae and Maili. They were dumped by the military after World War II. But no one knows for sure whether the munitions are a threat to man or the ocean environment. So beginning Wednesday, May 31, scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the University of Hawaii, and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources will survey a five square mile area on behalf of the Department of Defense. That area is now known to many as "ordnance reef." ... But people who fish and recreate in the ocean off Waianae and others who live along the coast fear there may be chemical weapons in the water. ...
