Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Subic Bay workers (Philippines) |
US’ forgotten workers in SubicLetter to the Editor Philippine Daily Inquirer June 8, 2006 WE, the officers and members of the Yamang Kalikasang Aming Pinangangalagaan (Yakap-Subic), an organization of victims of toxic and hazardous waste left by the US Navy in its Subic naval base (where we used to work), are disturbed that the USNS Mercy, the floating hospital of the US Navy, did not include Subic in its Philippine itinerary. (Inquirer, 5/22/06). We know how fully equipped this hospital is. It can help us who are suffering from various ailments we got from working in the Subic base. Out of the 1,500 members of our organization, there are 1,200 of us still living. But every day, we are getting weaker. Our members die at the rate of three to four persons a month. Three hundred have already died -- and probably many others more from another 8,000 workers who were exposed to asbestos. The latest case was Ces Olmo. He worked for 27 years in the base. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer caused by asbestos. ... For the entire letter, see http://news.inq7.net/opinion/index.php?index=1&story_id=78431 --
