Wells will give La Playa residents answer on fuel leakBy Steve Liewer SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE C A) July 7, 2006 Residents of Point Loma's La Playa neighborhood may soon know whether a massive pool of leaked fuel has seeped across the northern property line of the Point Loma Naval Base and under their historic bayview homes. A Navy contractor began digging two 50-foot-deep monitoring wells just outside the northern gate of the base last week, Capt. Mark Patton, the facility's commander, said at a town hall meeting Thursday night. Workers are expected to be finished next week and will reveal whether fuel is present within a few weeks. ... Navy officials will use the additional money for high-tech clean-up efforts at Rosecrans Street near the base's entrance, said Capt. Mark Patton, the base commander.
