Two pending issuesEditorial Korea Herald July 24, 2006 Two issues related to environmental problems seem to be hampering a smooth transition of the system of military cooperation between Korea and the United States. One is cleaning up the polluted soil of old U.S. bases which are to be returned to Korea, and the other is providing a new air-to-ground firing range for the U.S. air force in Korea to replace the Maehyangni range off the West Coast, which was closed because of complaints from nearby residents. Some ruling party National Assemblymen have joined environmental groups to call on U.S. military authorities to assume full financial responsibilities for cleansing the soil of the residue of fuel and other chemicals accumulated in the ground of their camps where troops have been stationed for decades since the war. They produced the result of new surveys that showed serious contamination of almost all of the 59 bases to be returned to Korea. ...
