Jackson Park Studies Stalled
The Navy has yet to develop an acceptable work plan for cleanup options.

Cleanup of buried munitions at the Navy’s Jackson Park Housing Complex has been delayed by a disagreement over how the investigation should proceed, officials say.

Last December, the Navy agreed to pay a $40,000 penalty for failing to submit a work plan for the investigation of an unknown quantity of buried munitions in the housing area. Most of the buried ordnance was left over from World War II and even World War I, when the site was operated as an ammunition depot.

The Environmental Protection Agency, which levied the penalty, is still in negotiations with the Navy for a final plan of action, according to Dave Croxton, EPA’s site cleanup manager.
