Group plants flag on KahoolaweBy Melissa Tanji and The Associated Press Maui News (HI) August 1, 2006 KAHOOLAWE – A Native Hawaiian sovereignty group rode two boats from Kihei to Kahoolawe on Monday, landed on the uninhabited island, set up a rock altar and planted a flag laying claim to the island. The 18 members of the group calling itself the Reinstated Hawaiian Kingdom are challenging U.S. sovereignty over land that was part of the Kingdom of Hawaii until 1893 and later incorporated into the United States in 1898. The group's prime minister, Henry Noa, speaking in Wailuku after the protesters were removed, stated his group's objective is to begin to reclaim lands "that lawfully belong to our Hawaiian nation." ...
