Harwich fireworks threatenedBy JASON KOLNOS Cape Cod Times (MA) August 5, 2006 HARWICH - Local water officials are threatening to halt the Cranberry Festival fireworks display unless costly measures are followed to prevent the chemical perchlorate from getting into the town's drinking water supply. In June, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection officials stated that perchlorate was found in nine commonwealth drinking water supplies, including three public wells where nearby fireworks displays appeared to be the source of the contamination. They also offered recommendations on how to minimize potential problems. Perchlorate is a chemical compound used as an oxygenator in fireworks - making them burn in bright colors. It is also used in military munitions and other kinds of explosives. ...
