Pollution monitoring surfaces with cleaning of obsolete ships Water board official concerned toxic material could be left in Bay By Thomas Peele CONTRA COSTA TIMES (CA) Augusst 11, 2006 Future cleaning of obsolete government ships in the Bay Area will be monitored for pollution after two World War II relics were towed from Suisun Bay to Richmond, where their hulls were scoured of marine growth, a state water regulator said Thursday. "Our concern is that the toxic materials attached to the boats like lead paint could end up in the water," said Keith Lichten, a senior engineer with the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board. Water board officials were unaware of the work until the Times reported on it Wednesday, Lichten said. The U.S. Maritime Administration is having the two ships cleaned at the Port of Richmond this week after the Coast Guard ordered it to remove organic growth from their hulls before towing the vessels to Texas for scrapping. ...
