WILLISTOWN -- A former Nike missile base on Delchester Road in Willistown
has been found to be contaminated by elevated levels of volatile organic
compounds, but contaminated groundwater does not pose a threat to nearby
neighbors, according to federal officials.

"We?ve identified there is a degree of contamination (on the site), but we
want to make clear to the public that there is no imminent health threat to
residents," said Chris Augsburger, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers in Baltimore, Md.

While residents close to the site are glad their well water has not been
affected, it is still a worrisome situation. One resident, who did not wish
to be identified, said, "It is grossly unfair that Willistown Township knew
about the contamination at the site and didn?t let anybody know."
