K-25 cleanup plans change

New policies increase safety measures; Trice named project manager

OAK RIDGE - Kelly Trice once managed the cleanup of "the most dangerous 
building in America," a plutonium-laden facility at the Rocky Flats 
warhead plant in Colorado.

Now he's tackling something bigger: the K-25 plant in Oak Ridge.

Trice will oversee the dismantling of the mile-long, U-shaped structure 
built during World War II to process uranium for atomic bombs. At the 
time of its construction, K-25 was the world's largest building under 
one roof. Sixty years later, it's just a big mess.

The nuclear behemoth was shut down in the 1960s and largely neglected 
since then. It is loaded with deposits of fissile U-235 and fraught with 
potential pitfalls.
