Burning Ravenna Arsenal unlikely EPA group against use of fire because of PCBs in old paint By Bob Downing Akron Beacon Journal (OH) September 1, 2006 The U.S. Army is likely to scrap its plans to burn old Portage County buildings containing paints with high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). That decision comes in the wake of what some are calling a landmark decision by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency work group that came out against such burning at military facilities. Burning five large buildings at the closed Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant east of Ravenna is "nowhere... a big zero for us," said Army spokesman Irving Venger. "It's not going to happen. It's a dead issue." It is likely that plans to test paint samples from the arsenal at a Battelle laboratory in Columbus will be scrapped because they are no longer needed, he said. ...
