Ft. Wainwright's needs spurs Fairbanks building boomBy Melissa Campbell Alaska Journal of Commerce September 24, 2006 FAIRBANKS - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is spending nearly $700 million to build nearly 2,000 housing and barracks units at Fort Wainwright over the next few years. The Corps in recent years has spent millions of dollars for housing on bases across the state in response to the military's changing missions and the need to replace old homes, officials at the Corps said. Nearly half of last year's $600 million construction budget went toward housing. ... But Taku, built by Watterson Construction, ran into some trouble as it was nearing completion. Crews uncovered PCBs last year, then this summer, came across two World War II-era bombs. PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, are highly toxic chemicals that are believed to cause cancer. The chemical was used in industrial equipment, but was banned in the 1970s due to the health effects. The bombs have been removed and work has resumed in that area. The area where the PCBs were found, however, has delayed the completion date until possibly as late as 2010. ...
