Cleanup of naval sites is a work in progressBy Meaghan Wims Newport Daily News (RI) September 23, 2006 From the vantage point of a tour boat on a crisp evening, the western shore of Aquidneck Island looks healthy, albeit rugged in many spots. But underneath much of the Navy-owned property lies remnants of petroleum, trash, paint, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other contaminants disposed of from as long ago as the 1940s. Cleanup of 19 sites on 1,063 acres from Coasters Harbor Island to Melville, the area formerly known as the Naval Education and Training Center, began in earnest five years ago under guidance from the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the state's Department of Environmental Management.
