Asbestos Settlement a Little Late for Some Many of the beneficiaries of a $5.1 billion payout were exposed while working at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. By Julie McCormick Kitsap Sun (WA) September 22, 2006 Burton Shepherd is living under a looming death sentence. From the time he was in the Navy during the Korean War through much of his early civilian career at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, he breathed in enough asbestos to give him malignant mesothelioma. The always-fatal cancer of the chest wall typically kills its victims within six to 18 months of diagnosis. Shepherd, 76, was diagnosed last November. This week, he was one of about 2,000 Washington residents to benefit from a landmark $5.1 billion settlement reached with asbestos manufacturer Owens Corning. ...
