Water contamination feared at old range U.S. inspectors also looking for contamination By Rob O'Dell ARIZONA DAILY STAR October 12, 2006 A former bombing and gun range south of the city is being combed by federal inspectors looking for unexploded ordnance and potential soil and water contamination. Subdivisions now dot the edges of the 40-square-mile former Sahuarita Air Force Range, once on the outskirts of Tucson, which was used from 1942 to 1962. The groundwater testing is of particular interest because the city owns or leases land in the range that's used by Tucson Water for nine groundwater production wells. About 10 miles of the former range are within the city limits, with the rest state trust land that is undeveloped and used mainly for cattle grazing. ...
