Hunter dodges bullet Applaud Chatham County commissioners for protecting Hunter Army Airfield from residential encroachment. Editorial Savannah Morning News October 24, 2006 CHATHAM COUNTY commissioners should be applauded for knowing the importance of the military to Georgia's economy. Last Friday, commissioners approved a land-use plan that protects the future of Hunter Army Airfield from residential encroachment. The action came after owners of 900 acres in Rockingham Farms area, just west of the airstrip at the Army installation, tried to clear the way for potential home construction. Commissioners wisely said no. Allowing houses to be built within a noise and accident zone would have hurt Hunter and its sister installation, Fort Stewart, in future rounds of base closures across the country. It would have jeopardized the estimated $1.4-billion annual economic impact that the military has in this region. Property owners tried to argue that eliminating the residential option was a wrongful "taking" of value. ...
