Natick Labs to remove toxic soilBy Jon Brodkin MetroWest Daily News (MA) October 28, 2006 NATICK -- The U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center will soon excavate as much as 800 tons of contaminated soil and, in a separate project, block an ongoing discharge of polluted groundwater into Lake Cochituate, according to an environmental scientist at the Army base. The latter project targets two plumes of contaminated groundwater discharging into the lake with chemicals that may cause cancer and liver problems. Once the chemicals reach the lake, they are apparently diluted to levels that cannot be detected, said Environmental Scientist Jim Connolly of the Natick Army Labs, a federal Superfund site. "If we can't detect it where we're discharging, it's not posing a threat to anyone. However, it's not right that we continue to discharge it," Connolly said. ...
