Fresno sues in airfield contamination City says feds, Boeing refuse to pay their share of the Hammer cleanup. By Pablo Lopez The Fresno Bee (CA) November 3, 2006 The city of Fresno has sued the federal government and Boeing Co., charging that they refuse to pay their share of the cleanup at Old Hammer Field, a contaminated section of the Fresno Yosemite International Airport. The former military base was polluted by a degreaser that was used to clean and refurbish aircraft during and after World War II. The degreaser contaminated the city's ground water, City Attorney James Sanchez said Thursday. The city discovered the problem in the late 1980s. To date, the city has spent $3.1 million to investigate and formulate a cleanup plan, Sanchez said. Boeing has spent $2.7 million, and the U.S. government has spent $5.5 million. ...
