Firework displayBy Greg Duggan Needham Daily News (MA) November 14, 2006 WESTWOOD -- The town still plans to shoot off fireworks for its annual New Year's Eve celebration, but due to worries about pollution the event won't take place at the regular site of Buckmaster Pond. While running tests to explore the possibility of using the pond as a drinking water source for Norwood, the state Department of Environmental Protection found perchlorate in five of the pond's seven wells. Perchlorate levels in one of the wells tested higher than recommended by the Department of Environmental Protection. According to the state's DEP Web site, perchlorate can affect the body's thyroid gland, which controls metabolism. The source of the perchlorate has yet to be determined, but the chemical compound is an inorganic salt used as a rocket propellant and often found in explosives and fireworks. ...
