Fire from the sky Dropped-flare incident highlights encroachment upon Nellis AFB BY ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY Las Vegas Business Press (NV) November 20, 2006 Among the many issues facing Col. Michael Bartley upon his arrival at Nellis Air Force Base, one was dealing with development creeping towards the base. But it has taken a higher priority than he expected. "You don't really completely understand anything until you get into it and start dealing with it, especially the encroachment" said Bartley, who took over command in March. "There's a balance between economic development and the expansive growth here in Las Vegas, but also with this mission and how the local area approaches or supports this mission in this space." In the first eight months as the new 99th Air Base Wing Commander, Bartley has already made a few appearances before the Clark County Commission to warn about development that may hurt the "mission of the base" -- advanced aerial combat training. ...
