Okinawa Governor-Elect Requests U.S. Base Closure in 3 YrsNichi Bei Times Weekly (Japan) November 30, 2006 TOKYO (Kyodo) - Hirokazu Nakaima, who won the recent Okinawa gubernatorial election, asked the central government Nov. 29 to close down the U.S. Marine Corps Futemma Air Station in Ginowan within the next three years to eliminate the risks involved in having the base next to a residential area. During the meeting with Defense Agency Director General Fumio Kyuma in Tokyo, Nakaima urged him to accept the demand, while Kyuma responded, "Both Japan and the United States as well as Okinawa Prefecture must agree on terms" for taking such action, adding it would be difficult. The United States and Japan reached an agreement in May to relocate the air station off Camp Schwab in the city of Nago. On Nakaima's demand, the U.S. consul general in Okinawa, Kevin Maher, told Kyodo News, "We cannot close down (the air station) before the construction of replacement facilities is complete." ...
