Cancer study ready on Shpack landfill By Heather Graf, GUEST COLUMNIST Norton Mirror (MA) January 5, 2007At the request of the Citizens Advisory Shpack Team and urging from our elected officials -— particularly Congressman Barney Frank, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health agreed in 2002 to conduct an evaluation of cancer incidence in Norton and Attleboro, within a one-mile radius of the Shpack Superfund site. For those unfamiliar with its location or history, the Shpack Site is on Union Road, the street which connects South Worcester Street in Norton (near the Chartley Fire House) and Peckham Street in Attleboro. The approximate 10-acre site, mostly in Norton, with 2 1/2 acres over the Attleboro line, was a privately owned dump (named after its owner Isadore Shpack) which accepted radiological, chemical and all other manner of industrial and residential waste between 1946 and 1965. Site investigations began back in 1978 after an area resident detected elevated levels of radioactivity there. ...
