Wheels of progress grinding slowly By Andrew McCue Southern Berks News (PA) January 4, 2007Almost a year ago, local, state and federal officials showed optimism in the possibility of selling and revitalizing Birdsboro's 101-acre Armorcast property. The idea continues to face many obstacles. The Schylkill riverfront property is considered a brownfield, a property complicated by the presence of hazardous substances, pollutants or contamination. ..."The Army is pretty well done," said Steve Willems of Keystone Commercial and Industrial LLC, the realtor marketing the property. Lampe said by the end of January, the Army should complete the project that was originally scheduled to end last fall. "But they decided there was more that they would take responsibility for cleaning up," she said. Lampe said the Army is only dealing with contamination that occurred during the military's stewardship of the site. "Just because they leave doesn't mean it's cleaned up," she said.The facility, including the 750,000-square-foot main building, once housed a military tank factory that operated during World War II and the Korean War. ...
