Too close for comfort? Peggy Ussery The Dothan Eagle March 17, 2007 In 1955, Fort Rucker didn't have as many civilian neighbors to worry about.Times change. Towns and cities have grown toward the military post. Houses continue to crop up around stagefields and airfields located away from the main post. "It's sort of a victim of its own success," said Scott Farmer, community development director for the Southeast Alabama Regional Planning Commission. As residential development encroaches upon the Army installation's air space, not to mention right up to its physical boundaries, Fort Rucker could be put at risk. Ozark Mayor Bob Bunting said there's one thing everyone in southeast Alabama can agree on - Fort Rucker is a $1.2-billion economic engine the area cannot afford to lose. ...
