Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Yuba Highlands and Beale Air Force Base (CA) |
Editorial: Yuba: Anything goes? Housing project new low point in planning Sacramento Bee (CA) May 3, 2007One would hope that a 5,100-unit housing project would face an uphill battle because it encroaches on the community's largest employer -- an Air Force base. Or because it violates just about every principle of modern planning -- build houses close to jobs, not in the boondocks where the land was cheap. Or because numerous government agencies found the environmental review shoddy, such as how a new paved road through a wildlife area isn't a significant issue. Or because the project doesn't have a firm water supply. Only in a county that is economically desperate or predisposed to growth of any kind would a project like this have a chance. This one apparently does. It is in Yuba County. And the project is known as Yuba Highlands. To many Sacramento area residents, Yuba County may seem like a separate universe. Think again. If development goes wild in Yuba County, it will have a profound impact on the future of the entire region, from the quality of the air to the level of congestion and the viability of housing closer to the urban core. If we sprawl too much, we will all suffer the consequences. ...
