National Guard wants lead ammunition again at Camp Edwards By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times (MA) May 16, 2007Next week, the Massachusetts National Guard will ask for permission to once again fire lead bullets at Camp Edwards. If federal Environmental Protection Agency officials approve the petition, they will reverse a decade-old ban on lead ammunition at the Upper Cape military base. The request from the Guard comes on the heels of a military-funded report that found lead from millions of rounds of ammunition fired at Camp Edwards over 70 years has posed little threat to the drinking water supply that lies beneath the base. Lifting the lead ban would pave the way for more training for the Guard, Coast Guard and local law enforcement — all of whom have expressed interest in using the ranges if lead ammo makes a comeback on the base. ...
