Cross-base highway approved as part of road plan

Weeks of contentious negotiations resulted in the approval this morning 
of a regional road construction package that includes funding for Pierce 
County's controversial cross-base highway.

The highway would link Interstate 5 to Highway 7 on a route between Fort 
Lewis and McChord Air Force Base. Supporters say it would alleviate 
traffic congestion and improve freight access to the Frederickson 
industrial area.

Environmental groups have opposed the highway, saying it will destroy 
some of the last oak prairie in the area. Equestrian groups fear it will 
cut off their access to Fort Lewis. And some military veterans fear it 
will encroach on the military bases, making them targets for closure in 
the future.
