NASA, city tangle Over water cleanup By Joe Piasecki Pasadena Weekly (CA) June 14, 2007As they prepare to push a voluntary water conservation program, Pasadena Water and Power officials are challenging a NASA study which concludes that the dumping of rocket fuel by the US Army some 50 years ago at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) did not cause pollution now making much of the city's groundwater undrinkable. Perchlorate, a rocket fuel component polluting nine of the city's 16 underground drinking wells, can affect function of the hormone-producing thyroid gland — important for a healthy metabolism in adults and essential to skeletal and nervous system development in infants and fetuses. With more than half of local groundwater resources deemed unsafe by federal health standards and no relief from a nine-year drought (see “Low boil” on page 11) in sight, PWP will in the next few weeks launch a campaign to encourage voluntary cutbacks in water consumption, said Water Division Director Shan Kwan.
