Solvent-heavy plume draws debate By Amanda Lehmert Cape Cod Times (MA) June 15, 2007FALMOUTH — It's a choice between diluting the pollution until it is safe to drink, or spending millions to make the water cleaner, sooner. Air Force and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials have reached a stalemate in the debate over the Ashumet Valley solvent plume, which flows under Falmouth and wells in the Backus River. If the Air Force and the EPA cannot reach an agreement after the close of a public comment period that ends July 13, the debate could go into high-level arbitration, which could take months to resolve, EPA officials said at a public meeting this week. Virginia Valiela, a retired Falmouth selectmen and longtime safe water advocate, has vowed to raise the issue with town officials in the coming weeks. ...
