Air Force, ham radio operators seek common ground By Amanda Lehmert Cape Cod Times (MA) June 25, 2007SAGAMORE - Amateur radio operators are clearing the path for the Air Force's PAVE PAWS radar. But efforts to eliminate the interference between amateur radio equipment and the military missile-tracking technology may not be enough. According to representatives from the American Radio Relay League, which is trying to resolve the issues between ham operators and the Air Force, some amateur radio repeaters may have to go off line permanently. Earlier this year, Air Force officials asked the Federal Communications Commission to make ham operators eliminate interference with the radar, or shut down dozens of repeaters - devices that broadcast a weak amateur radio signal so it has more reach. The PAVE PAWS radars in Sagamore and in California share the 420- to 450-megahertz frequency with the amateur radio operators, who use the repeaters in pursuit of a hobby or to assist local towns in emergency situations. ...
