I just can't wait to see what will be the long term healthcare and cleanup costs for Iraq and Afghanistan. I've been thinking about all that RDX, HMX, lead, DNT, perchlorate, depleted uranium, and subsequent daughter products of their breakdown hitting the drinking water supplies of those nations. Maybe if we had Congress legislate that healthcare and cleanup costs be added to the costs of war, we could convince any leader in the White House that it wasn't in our self-interest to drop / fire these poisonous nasties, let alone create them, in the first place? Korea) June 25, 2007 SEOUL -- A controversy has erupted over the costs for cleaning up U.S. military bases returned to South Korea earlier this year, as former and current South Korean defense ministers testified Monday at a parliamentary hearing on the viability of the process to get back the bases. Critics say the government will have to spend at least 2 trillion won (US$2.2 billion) in taxpayers' money to clean up roughly 60 U.S. bases to be handed over by 2011. They argue almost all of the bases are seriously contaminated with oil and heavy metals. In a report commissioned by the National Assembly, in fact, a local professor said a minimum of 600 billion won will be needed to decontaminate 23 bases returned earlier this year. ...
