Plan to fire lead bullets at Cape base on target By Amanda Lehmert Cape Cod Times (MA) July 12, 2007FALMOUTH - If all goes as planned, this time next year three ranges will ring with gunfire at Camp Edwards. Yesterday, Guard leaders announced their intention to use $1 million from Congress to add two additional bullet traps at the small arms ranges at the Massachusetts Military Reservation. The news came as the Guard fulfilled one of the final steps to lift a decade-long lead ammunition ban at the base. At a meeting yesterday in Falmouth, the state Environmental Management Commission amended a rule that had banned lead ammo at Camp Edwards. The commission - which includes three of the state's top environmental leaders - also approved the Guard's detailed range operation plans for Tango range, which has a bullet trap to prevent toxic lead ammunition from entering the environment. But federal Environmental Protection Agency leaders still must give the Guard the final nod before live fire can begin on a trial basis later this summer. That approval is expected to come by the end of next week, according to the Lynne Jennings of the EPA. ...
