Atlantic Wood cleanup may cost $45 million By JANIE BRYANT, The Virginian-Pilot July 24, 2007 PORTSMOUTHAtlantic Wood Industries was hailed as a sign of industrial growth in the city when it began operating on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in 1926. Today, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that it will cost $45 million to clean up the Superfund site that served as a wood-treating plant until 1992. The 48-acre property, west of the Jordan Bridge, was heavily contaminated with the creosote and pentachlorophenol used to preserve wood. ...During the design process, agency officials discovered that "the contamination was a lot worse and had a wider variety of contaminants," Sturgeon said.
