FLORENCE - Further testing for perchlorate in the vicinity of Omya's 
quarry operations has found levels of the chemical that are well below 
regulatory limits, according to a group hired to assess the 
environmental impacts of the company's calcium carbonate operation.

CLF Ventures said in a release Friday that a team of independent 
scientists found that preliminary results for additional perchlorate 
analyses of water samples at the Hogback quarry, as well as drinking 
water samples, were well within regulatory guidelines.

In early July, perchlorate was detected in surface water samples at the 
northern and southern ends of Hogback Quarry at levels of 77 parts per 
billion and 7.9 parts per billion. Further surface water testing at the 
quarry was done Aug. 7, and on Aug. 17 from several residential wells 
and the Pittsford-Florence municipal supply well.

The report said additional testing found that the highest concentration 
of perchlorate at the quarry was 1 part per billion with no traces of 
the chemical found in two ponds near the quarry.
