Depot eyes rocket work By JIM HOOK Chambersburg Public Opinion (PA) September 20, 2007Letterkenny Army Depot could be a step in the Army's effort to dispose of aging rockets in an environmentally friendly manner. The U.S. Senate recently approved a Defense appropriations bill setting aside $6.5 million for the recovery, reuse and recycling of components from the Multiple-Launch Rocket System. The measure needs House approval and the president's signature. The Defense Ammunition Center in McAlester, Okla., is researching ways to end the open burning of propellant from the MLRS, according to Ken Johnson, security manager at the Letterkenny Munitions Center. Production field testing would be developed at Letterkenny. Letterkenny burns or detonates about 4 million pounds of conventional explosives every year at a barren site resembling a World War I battlefield. ...
