IAAP cleaning up area By KILEY MILLER Burlington Hawk Eye (IA) September 21, 2007Like doctors attacking cancer with chemotherapy, technicians from an environmental firm spent the first half of this month placing ports in the ground along U.S. 61 south of Burlington so they could go after a contamination plume from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant with a special kind of medicine. Under the eyes of countless passing motorists, Tetra Tech, a Tennessee company handling much of the pollution cleanup at the ammunition plant, finished drilling 11 wells along the highway near Brush Creek earlier this week. A sugary solution known as sodium acetate will be pumped down the wells to feed a battalion of natural microbes living in the soil. As these tiny, brainless, spineless soldiers -- Rodger Allison has called them "magic bugs" -- gorge on their own version of children's breakfast cereal, they also will devour a batch of the explosive compound RDX that long ago leeched off the 19,000-acre plant in Middletown. ...
