Fort Rucker, local towns seek compromise on land use By Jane McCardle Dothan Eagle (AL) September 26, 2007The sounds of helicopters is music to some people’s ears. To others, the constant noise from Fort Rucker’s training grounds is frustrating and annoying. In an attempt to reach a compromise with those on each side, the leadership of communities surrounding Fort Rucker and post officials are teaming up to ensure that the future growth of one does not interfere with the other. The Joint Land Use Study grant was recently approved, and representatives from Fort Rucker, the Pentagon and several local governments will be participants in the 15-month study to ensure that Fort Rucker’s military mission is not compromised due to the issue of encroachment, a process by which a military base is progressively hemmed in by urban growth and competition for air space. ...
