Speaker’s Stand ... EPA responds to Star coverage Opinion by Franklin Hill (U.S. EPA) Anniston Star (AL) October 4, 2007 Re “Can contaminated depot site be cleaned up?” (News article, Sept. 11):The Star’s article mischaracterized the important steps the United States Environmental Protection Agency is taking to address contaminants in ground water at the Anniston Army Depot. The article implied that the EPA would essentially allow the cleanup at the depot to be abandoned if it would take more than a century to resolve. This is not the EPA’s position, which was not included or requested from this article. The EPA has provided oversight of the groundwater cleanup since the early 1990s, including the upgrades to the existing treatment systems added in 2001 and the installation of air-strippers at Coldwater Spring. Though the amount of trichloroethylene (TCE) released is estimated to be very large and has proven difficult to clean up due to complex hydrogeology and a generally poor response to treatment, the EPA does believe that newer technologies exist that have promise to treat the TCE in ground water over a shorter time frame. ...
