Chapman Valve workers radiation claims in limbo By JO-ANN MORIARTY Springfield Republican (MA) October 23, 2007WASHINGTON - On the eve of the demolition of the Chapman Valve plant in Springfield, most former workers who have filed for compensation for exposure to radioactivity have received nothing. Of 406 claims that have been filed for compensation, only 63 have been approved for payment, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. No new approvals have come in the last year and a half. The 63 former workers have received a total of $5.1 million.The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee today held an oversight hearing on progress of a federal program in giving compensation or benefits to workers. ...
