House Panel Approves Tighter Standards for Drinking Water Congressional Quarterly CQ TODAY MIDDAY UPDATE November 8, 2007A bill that would limit the levels of perchlorate in drinking water was approved Thursday by a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee. The Environmental Protection Agency would be required under the measure to set a national drinking water standard for the chemical, which is used in rocket fuel. The Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials approved the bill by voice vote. Supporters of the legislation say it is particularly important for pregnant women. A 2006 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found changes to thyroid hormone levels in women exposed to perchlorate. ...
