25-year depot cleanup hits milestone By JIM HOOK Chambersburg Public Opinion (PA) November 23, 2007 Studies outlining the environmental cleanup of Letterkenny Army Depot are winding down after more than 25 years. The Army has awarded an $18.6 million contract to Weston Solutions to install all remaining cleanup remedies by June 2010. The performance-based contract is expected to save time and money without sacrificing the quality of the cleanup, according to Army officials. "I am pleased Weston got it," said DeEtta Antoun, citizen member of a local board that reviews the Letterkenny cleanup. "They understand the conditions at Letterkenny. The company has been performing the (cleanup) service for years." The Army has spent $118 million studying and cleaning up tainted soils and groundwater at the depot north of Chambersburg since 1982. The Army and its tenants has been one of the largest employers in Franklin County since its inception during World War II. Vehicle repair was Letterkenny's bread-and-butter for decades. ...
