Developers show interest in latest Navy jet field plan By Gregory Richards The Virginian-Pilot December 11, 2007 It could be a perfect scenario. The Navy would get the jet landing field it seeks in Virginia or North Carolina while restricting development on thousands of surrounding acres. On some of that land, developers would be able to build large cargo distribution centers, operations typically not affected by the roar of fighter-jet take-offs and landings. That combination is being pitched by the Virginia Port Authority and the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance, a group seeking to expand the federal presence in the region. Jobs and increased tax revenues would result from building freight-sorting centers on between 2,500 and 5,000 acres, said Frank Roberts, the alliance’s executive director. That would help make the idea of a new outlying landing field in Virginia more palatable, he said. ...
