Corps groundwater contamination cleanup on hold By MICHAEL STRAND Salina Journal December 7, 2007 Much of the work by the Army Corps of Engineers to clean up groundwater contamination at the former Schilling Air Force Base is on hold until the corps and the local government entities that own the land decide who will run the project from now on. The corps has for years been working with the Salina Airport Authority, the Salina School District, Kansas State University at Salina and the city of Salina on measuring the extent of the solvent trichloroethylene and how it's migrating. Three weeks ago, Robyn Kieffer, who is managing project cleanup for the Corps of Engineers, told the Salina Journal that the corps and those organizations were in talks about turning over responsibility for directing the cleanup. An agreement is expected after the first of the year. ...
