Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Agana Swamp (Guam) PCBs |
What's being done about PCB testing in fish in the Agana Swamp? by Ronna Sweeney KUAM News (GU) January 20, 2008 For years a fish and eel consumption advisory has been in effect at the Agana Swamp due to PCB contamination caused by the old Agana Power Plant. And while decreased levels of PCBs have been found in areas formerly cleaned up by the U.S. Navy, a new study shows that levels of PCBs found in fish located elsewhere in the area has actually gone up. Nearly 60 years ago, the old plant was built and operated by the Navy, and before 1989 the plant used polychlorinated biphenyls as cooling oils for its electrical transformers and switching gears. Once the power plant was handed over to the Government of Guam, PCBs, dioxins, and other toxic contaminants were found in the soils in and around the old Agana Power Plant. And in 2000 the Navy completed a removal action in which 3,700 cubic yards of soil containing the hazardous materials from and around the plant was removed and disposed of. And the old plant was identified not to be a source of PCBs to the Agana Swamp and river any longer. ...
